[Album Review] Of Clocks And Clouds – ‘Better Off’

For Fans of: Wild Yaks, The Whigs, Future Islands, Nine Inch Nails

“Better Off” – You are “Better Off” hearing this one!

Listening to the new album by Of Clocks And Clouds, titled ‘Better Off‘ was truly a pleasure to my ears, body, & mind overall. The songs took me to another reality which soared to amazing heights. The group started the album off with a song called “Burn A Hole”, which made for an excellent introduction. With little electronic explosions happening all around like miniature firecrackers, I felt as if I was about to start an exciting journey into an unknown but welcomed matrix. Left anticipating more, I continued to listen & was again captivated by the pulsing guitar & relatable lyrics of  “She Had To Go”. The song following, titled “When She’s High” did an excellent job of presenting a chilled out vibe, with the soothing groove of the percussion. The album continues on with a nice instrumental track titled, “Open Heart Failure”. This one had really neat zapping electronic noises, smooth dynamic switches, & nice underlying deep grunge & synth-like sounds soaring in and out. It felt like an action song, but at a comfortable pace. The song “Another Life” followed this, bringing the rocking beat & vocals back in with the scrolling bass, & more psychedelic sounds. I particularly liked the theme of this song. “Komorebi” was another enjoyable instrumental to break up the album, which included a neat shuffling panning effect throughout. The title track “Better Off” was definitely one of my favorites by them; including echoing vocals, cool saw-like synth effects, & remnants of Pink Floyd shining through. Of Clocks And Clouds finished the album off with a bonus track for us lucky listeners, as this too was amazingly haunting in a good way. I am excited to see where they take this album as it is truly a work of art put together like a beautiful puzzle. The image left in my head is one of another dimension, another world. Thank you Of Clocks And Clouds for opening my mind even more. I see this band raising the consciousness of whoever listens, & like the title suggests, you are “better off” after you listen.
