Exclusive Review : The Mighty Fine “Brothers & Smugglers”

Recently signed to Creator-Destructor Records, The Mighty Fine hit the ground running with the release of their new album “Brothers & Smugglers” which this time around is produced by none other than Kyle Black (Strung Out, Set Your Goals, Comeback Kid)

Hailing from the West Coast of California and bringing with them their own spin on the melodic punk scene this new release bares resemblance to the sounds you could hear coming from labels like No Idea and Epitaph all the while bringing something even fresher and greatly missing from the music scene currently.

The album itself which drops on the 4th of March is available for preorder right now through Creator-Destructor’s website http://creatordestructor.bigcartel.com/, but before you guys jump at the chance to pick up this album for yourselves let me fill you in on exactly what you’d be missing out on if you were too dumb to not take my advice.

Right from the start of the album, ‘The Mighty Fine’ (which consists of Brook Thompson on Vocals/Guitar Casey Wieber – Guitar/Vocals Mike Castillo – Bass/Vocals Chris Scott – Drums)  ease you in on whats going to be a hell of a journey with ‘Into The Clouds’ which to my ears sounds reminiscent to early Sum 41 which may just be the Canadian in me hearing that, but as it stands it’s a perfect opener to get you ready for everything else that follows. Jumping straight into the next song ‘Break The Tide’  they keep the flow going attractively and if by this point you haven’t realize these guys are able to crank out catchy, powerful anthems you’re probably not listening properly.

What starts out as thinking ‘Palindrome‘ may be a bit of a softer song you’re briskly thrown back into what I’ve come to love from these guys and without looking at lyrics I tried to see if there was any palindromes in the song but for the life of me I couldn’t cut it with all my brain power so if you manage to track some down let me know. Jumping a bit further into the album you’ll come along the song ‘Trade Brigade’  which is the stand out anthem on this LP, but you don’t have to take my word for it.

I’m not going to lie to you, by the time you usually get to the last remaining songs on any LP you’re starting to feel the drain and some of the songs you feel the bands toss on there just for filler but in the case of ‘Brothers & Smugglers‘ that couldn’t be more far from the truth. Not once throughout the entire album did I feel a song didn’t deserve to be on there or didn’t add to the story, everything has been perfectly placed and beautifully performed to keep bringing you something new on each track and wanting to see what could be next.

Now you’re probably wondering where the hell is the single? Well in the case of The Mighty Fine they throw their first single on as the very last track. ‘Daphne’  is the be all end all of the album and out of all the tracks on the album I can see why they chose this one as the single and to end the album. Leaving the catchiest song until the very end will leave you thinking about the album long after it’s done and get you coming back for more. Accompanying the single the band has released a video for it which can be found after this sentence or by possibly clicking on the following link if this hasn’t gone through some sort of editor.

If this were a race this is where i’d be congratulating you for reaching the end without giving up but if you did give up or didn’t even stop to listen to this album, I can tell you right now you’re the reason why Miley Cyrus is making millions and bands like this aren’t getting the proper recognition. If you couldn’t tell by my reaction so far if I liked the album or not you’d be very oblivious. Coming from someone who had never heard of this band (I blame you Cyrus!) I was sold after the first few songs. Going in with out any preconceived notions of the band made it all that much better for me and I truly do hope you all take the time to give this band a listen. Hell if you do end up grabbing ‘Brothers & Smugglers’ don’t forget about their other albums which can be bought directly from their website; http://themightyfine.com and if you’re feeling even more antsy for a dose of The Mighty Fine they’re currently playing select dates with The Ataris, Hearstsounds and more.
