I the Mighty headline tour thrills fans in Philadelphia

I the Mighty truly outdid themselves to make their fall headline tour impossible for fans to resist. First, they rounded up an impressive lineup of supporting acts including Dayshell, Artifex Pereo, and Picturesque. Secondly, they promised to deliver a performance of The Frame Trilogy, which they’ve never done before (and all of us have been dying for). To top it off, fans were offered an incredibly affordable and unique show experience. VIP ticket holders enjoyed hot tea and a meet and greet with the band, a two song acoustic set, and an exclusive merch bundle.

While I welcome the chance to chat with any of my favorite musicians, I find the typical band “meet and greet” extremely awkward. No matter how friendly the artists are, there’s just something so impersonal about standing in a slow-moving line and waiting to shake hands across a table, while everyone behind you is silently hoping you’ll keep your conversation short. I the Mighty took a different approach by simply mingling with the crowd. Shortly after my friend and I grabbed a cup of tea, I was greeted by guitarist Ian Pedigo. He walked up to us smiling, introduced himself, and expressed his gratitude for our attendance before striking up a casual conversation with us. The other band members followed suit, conversing with fans in a completely non-awkward fashion.

Shortly before doors were about to open, front-man Brent Walsh asked everyone to gather around and sit in a circle for the acoustic set. He told stories about the band’s origin and the meaning behind the logo that appears hidden on each of their albums’ artwork before taking a vote on the first song via a show of hands. The acoustic version of “Slow Dancing Forever,” which appears on the recently released Oil and Water EP, turned into a truly beautiful sing-along with everyone present.

The sing-alongs continued later in the night, as their headline set was packed with even more passion and energy from in front of stage, as well as on the stage. They delivered a balance of recent hits from Connector such as “The Lying Eyes of Miss Erray” and “Playing Catch with .22,” along with older favorites from 2013’s Satori. Throughout the set, bassist Chris Hinkley took just as many dives into the crowd as the fans who surfed their way onto the stage. During “Speak To Me,” another guitarist took over rhythm strings duty to allow Walsh to get up close and personal with the crowd. The band even managed to pull off a drum solo in the center of the venue. The Frame Trilogy served as a perfect conclusion to an incredible performance. I truly cannot say enough good things about these guys, and I look forward to watching them gain the recognition they deserve as they move onto bigger, better venues in the near future!
