The CMDWN reveal writing process, influences, and more

Interview by Ali Brant

Some of you are coming to the band with a post-hardcore background, and you’re exploring new genres with The CMDWN. How did the unique sound of the band come together?

It started off after writing a few songs that were a little more typical, the heavy verses and a melodic chorus. We wanted to try something new and bring something really different into our music. One night Chris was singing along to a song by JMSN, who has a lot of those slow, dark, groovy elements. Chris was nailing it and sounded amazing in that style, so we kind of thought, “We all love this type of electronic music, it’s really dark and feels pretty heavy, and Chris sounds so good doing it, why not bring that influence in?”

Can you tell us a little bit about the band’s writing process?

Normally we start with a vocal melody that Chris comes up with, and then Devin gets an idea or uses something for the part, or Tyler starts making a drum pattern that we base the guitars around. Or we start with the electronic beat, create the melody and then frame the guitars around that.

I love your new single “For the Last Time,” and the video for the track is so simple yet powerful at the same time. Can you tell us about the concept behind the video?

That’s actually just a stream video! We put it together to help reflect the meaning of the song. We just shot the official music video which will be coming soon! The song is all about the general “love song”, but from a different perspective. Rather than the normal “my first love, the one and only, etc.”, For The Last Time is more about finding that right person much later, after already going through trial and error of human interactions at a younger age. At least the main idea, anyways.

Your recent singles have pretty intense, dark lyrics with dual meanings. Does your upcoming full-length have the same common theme throughout?

It’s not something like a rule that we’re sticking to, but it just happens as we write the lyrics and themes of the songs. So most likely, yes!

What bands\albums are currently inspiring each of you?

Chris: Hozier – Self-Titled
Devin: PVRIS – White Noise
Andy: Bring Me The Horizon – That’s The Spirit
Tyler: Snarky Puppy – Sylva

Who would be on your dream tour line-up?

Linkin Park would be insane to do a full tour with! Bring Me The Horizon as well, and ISSUES.
