The incredible excitement surrounding the influential late ’90s indie rock trio’s – Mike Kinsella (Cap’n Jazz, Owen, Owls), Steve Lamos, and Steve Holmes – album reissue and reunion shows was on full display when American Football’s three night run at Webster Hall in NYC this October surprised many by selling out in a matter of minutes. But to fans of the band or those familiar with their immense influence upon the musicians that followed in their understated yet significant artistic wake, the phenomenon was no surprise at all. The reissue itself has been met with incredible enthusiasm too, completely selling out of a limited 2000 copy pressing of yellow/green vinyl 2xLP via label pre-order. Long established fans and younger generations who have discovered American Football years after their dissolution have eagerly anticipated hearing the unreleased songs and live recordings found on the reissue.
The American Football (Deluxe Edition)reissue remains available for pre-order on 2xLP (Red Vinyl), 2xCD, cassette tape, and digital formats. Beautifully expanded packaging incorporates new photographs from Chris Strong along with lyrics, detailed liner notes written by the band, and never-before-seen band pictures.
In the 15 years since its release, American Football’s self-titled debut full-length has quietly become one of the most fiercely beloved titles in the Polyvinyl catalog. Though the trio only played a few shows and released just one other record (a three-song EP that preceded this full-length), their influence and legacy has steadily continued to grow in the time after they disbanded.
