French-American singer-songwriter Tiphanie Doucet‘s latest single, “My Own Way” is released today on Friday, April 26th. It is a light indie-folk single that shows a huge amount of resolve in its lyrics. Doucet wrote the song during a period of self-doubt amid industry pressure. However, “My Own Way” emerges as a testament to Doucet’s sense of self-discovery.
An artist who proclaims on her YouTube page to be for fans of Taylor Swift or Juliette Armanet, Doucet’s latest single caters in many ways, additionally, to fans of Phoebe Bridgers or Sufjan Stevens. “My Own Way” has a certain melancholia to it. However, it also stands in carefree defiance of the music industry’s staunchness and Doucet’s own impostor syndrome. In this sense, it is a song of triumph amid pressures that could break almost anyone else into pieces.
When listening to “My Own Way”, the song conveys degrees of stoic seriousness and introspection in largely equal measure. Doucet’s harp work lends a poignancy to the track, The guitar and percussion both provide a chill, almost lo-fi, quality to the song. For an indie-folk song, “My Own Way” is surprisingly poppy, in a lower-tempo sort of fashion.
The hook that serves as the foundation for “My Own Way” is quite catchy. Its use of the long-A syllable in repetition lends itself well to the song becoming an earworm in many minds. But in the end, that doesn’t seem to be the point. As Tiphanie Doucet herself has said:
“I think everyone has a moment in their life when they just stop listening to everybody and choose to make their own decisions.”

To that end, this wasn’t a move made to invoke catchiness or plant the hook in anyone’s head; that just happened to be the result. And, truth be told, we wouldn’t have it any other way.
