Young Lungs LP due out May 22, 2014
March 28, 2014 | Pittsburgh, PA– The Steel City-based indie rockers known as Instead of Sleepinghave been hard at work preparing for the release of their new full-length record, Young Lungs, set to drop on May 22, 2014! The band tapped the producing and mixing skills of Marc McClusky(Weezer, Bad Religion, Ludo, Let Live) for the new project, tracking the songs between SAE Institute Chicago and Very Tight Recordings in their hometown of Pittsburgh. IOS also successfully funded a Kickstarter campaign to help fund the costs of the album (check out their project here). When asked about what went into making the new record, the band explained,
“This is an entirely new album for not only our listeners, but for ourselves as a band, hence the name, Young Lungs. To us, this album feels like our very first breath of fresh air. It’s invigorating, exciting, and makes us feel as though the sky’s the limit. When people start listening to it, we hope that they feel the same way.
Creating Young Lungs was a huge learning experience for us. Our songwriting has changed and matured so drastically in a way that we are both excited and anxious to see the reactions to its release. We have always prided ourselves on the fact that we do not write the same song ten different ways. Young Lungs is dynamic. The album spans from high-energy songs that make you want to blow out your car speakers while speeding through a tunnel, to down tempo songs that you want playing in the background when you bring somebody home for the night that you just met. We balanced our own personal experiences and feelings in a way that each song’s message is clear.”

They released their first effort, a self-titled full-length in March 2010 and followed it up with theirJust Hear to Listen EP soon after in January 2011.
During their years together, Instead of Sleeping has evolved from a hookah-bar jam band into a multi-instrumental outfit. Now showcasing two drum kits, keys, and a myriad of other sound that transformed the band from a traditional indie-rock quartet into a swelling stage presence. The fellas built up a strong reputation as an independent rock band touring regionally on their third studio effort, The Reds, The Blacks, The Grays, which dropped in the Spring of 2012. The band has been privileged to share the stage with notable national acts fun., The Dear Hunter, O’Brother, and Good Old War.
Instead of Sleeping is set to release their next album titled Young Lungs on May 22, 2014. They headed out to Chicago to work with renowned producer/mixer Marc McClusky (Weezer, Bad Religion, Ludo, Let Live) on their new full-length project. The band credits McClusky for refining their musical chops, stating, “We learned more about music and songwriting in the sixteen days that we spent with him in SAE Institute than we ever had in our entire lives. He really challenged us to write outside of our comfort zones. While this was terrifying, going through a creative and musical gauntlet, we came out of it with an album that we couldn’t be more proud of.”
Instead of Sleeping plan to release their debut single from Young Lungs in early April. Keep up with band online for teasers, new music and exclusive updates.
