American Football make the first stop on their reunion show run this coming Sunday, September 28th
at The Pygmalion Festival in Champaign/Urbana, IL, the location of the trio’s formation and until recently, last live performances over 15 years ago. The same amount of time has passed since the release of their seminal self-titled 1999 debut album. Reissued as a deluxe edition this past spring, American Football (Deluxe Edition) debuted at #68 on the Billboard 200 charts. An incredible feat for an album that never went out of print and has remained one of Polyvinyl Records’ most consistent releases year to year.
Though the trio only played a few shows and released just one other record (a three-song EP that preceded American Football), their influence and legacy has steadily continued to grow in the time after they disbanded. Upon its release, Pitchfork named the deluxe edition reissue “Best New Reissue” and noted that “we’re only now beginning to recognize how American Football struck an emotional chord, one that’s proven to be every bit as resonant.“
