AMERICAN FOOTBALL RELEASE VIDEO FOR “NEVER MEANT” DEBUTED ON NPR MUSIC FIRST WATCH DELUXE EDITION REISSUE OF SELF-TITLED DEBUT ALBUM OUT NOW ON POLYVINYL RECORDS DEBUTS AT #68 ON BILLBOARD 200 CHARTS American Football and Polyvinyl Records are excited to unveil the music video for “Never Meant”, from the deluxe edition reissue of the influential Chicago/Urbana, IL band’s seminal self-titled 1999 debut album. Released this past month on May 20th, the American Football Deluxe Edition reissue debuted at #68 on the Billboard 200 charts. An amazing feat for an album that never went out of print and has remained one of Polyvinyl records most consistent releases. Pitchfork named the release a “Best New Reissue” and noted that “we’re only now beginning to recognize how American Football struck an emotional chord, one that’s proven to be every bit as resonant.” Watch “Never Meant” on NPR Music’s “First Watch” http://www.npr.org/event/music/317432831/american-football-never-meant “The video for ‘Never Meant’ takes place in Urbana Illinois circa 1999,” explains video director Chris Strong. “The song about breaking up, moving on and forgetting so I made a story about a brief relationship occurring between two characters at the end of their college experience. I wanted to craft a story that referenced the original album artwork so we shot in and around the house that appears on the original album cover and used the cover image as a jumping off point for the story.” Available on 2xLP (Red Vinyl), 2xCD, cassette tape, and digital formats, the deluxe edition reissue features beautifully expanded packaging and incorporates new photographs from Chris Strong along with lyrics, detailed liner notes written by the band, and never-before-seen band pictures. “After 15 years the record is lyrically, stylistically, and sonically referenced, revered, and beloved.” – Noisey/Vice This fall the band will reunite for their first live shows since disbanding 15 years ago, playing The Pygmalion Festival as well as three sold-out shows at Webster Hall in New York City. The incredible excitement surrounding the late ’90s indie rock trio’s – Mike Kinsella (Cap’n Jazz, Owen, Owls), Steve Lamos, and Steve Holmes – album reissue and reunion shows was on full display when American Football’s three night run at Webster Hall in NYC this October surprised many by selling out in a matter of minutes. In the 15 years since its release, American Football’s self-titled debut full-length has quietly become one of the most fiercely beloved titles in the Polyvinyl catalog. Though the trio only played a few shows and released just one other record (a three-song EP that preceded this full-length), their influence and legacy has steadily continued to grow in the time after they disbanded. www.americanfootballmusic.com Upcoming Reunion Shows: September 28th – Champaign/Urbana, IL – The Pygmalion Festival (thepygmalionfestival.com) October 10th – New York, NY – Webster Hall (SOLD OUT) October 11th – New York, NY – Webster Hall (SOLD OUT) October 12th – New York, NY – Webster Hall (SOLD OUT) |
