Artist Spotlight: Son of Simon

On earth there are absolutely billions of us, struggling to find our way and trying to achieve our wildest dreams and a vast majority of those people go down the hard road of musicianship. Its not an easy road paved in gold and 9 times out of 10 it always leads to more stress than it’s good for.

However, there are a select few out there that through all the denials and through all the tribulations of trying to make it, don’t give up and even a smaller select few that actually have the talent to make something of themselves and since being here in England I’ve been able to come across a few of these people, so like I did before with the band Wayward Daughter I bring you another instalment of whatever this is (I really need to find a name).

From a small little seaside city called Brighton comes another insanely talented singer/songwriter by the name of Andy Wilson-Taylor (He’s a singer). Back in 2007, Andy formed a band called ‘Midgar whilst studying  at the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford. For the next 5 years the band toured extensively and managed to release 3 records getting a widespread following from all over the world.

As of late the bands been in some sort of hiatus style thing but that hasn’t stopped him from still pursuing music. Currently trying his hand at composing for film (some of which will be released later this year) as well as working on his latest solo project entitled ‘Son of Simon

With an album hinted at being released later this year there has been very little in terms of movement since February of this year, but that all changed when he released his first track called ‘Moonlight’ just the other day which fuelled the fire in me to get the word out because if anyone deserves some recognition for their talents it’s this guy.

Moonlight’  jumps right in with a very ambient sound to it and when Andy’s voice takes over you’re hooked from the very first line. This is a guy who knows his range better than most out there and is able to play it off so perfectly. The layering of his own voice in the song is where it really picks up and the track takes on a life of it’s own giving off a very dreamlike state of enjoyment. Following up with the piano and vocals is a well put together orchestral backing that really gives it that much more and makes the whole thing feel like a cinematic piece which could be from the idea of composing backing him.

If the rest of this upcoming album captures anything of what ‘Moonlight is able to capture its really going to end up being one of the best things to come out of the south of England. Keep your eyes and ears on this one and follow the release via the Son of Simon Facebook page and hell go download the track from his Soundcloud page now for absolutely nothing, and if you’re still craving more you can always look to the past and take a peak at Midgar but who wants to look into the past when you have something to look forward to on the horizon.
