Say what you will about the sleepy towns of South Carolina, but some of the best melodic hardcore bands have emerged from that coastal scene in recent years. Following in the tradition of Hundredth and others, Tidelands rips in the scene with their debut ep and packs plenty of punch.
In a genre that is as flooded by local bands Tidelands stands out by sheer determination alone. Frontman Josh Wehrung unleashes pure tenacity with each assault on the microphone that is driven by a solid percussive element from drummer Justin Zuczek, which is not to discount the electric shred pouring from the guitar. Labyrinth, which features Daniel McWhorter of Gideon, contains some of the heaviest lyrical messages in an album that dwells heavily on the struggle of youth and accomplishment. This track alone will put you in touch with the genuine delivery and “home-grown” ethic behind the band, which I would surmise as “be what you are and be the best at it.” McWhorter here also showcases some of the best vocals I’ve heard out of all his work with Gideon.
It will be interesting to see what the future holds for these Myrtle Beach natives. Anyone with eyes and ears will want to keep a tab open on this band because they may just be the next big breakout. You can keep in touch by using the links below:
