[Exclusive Interview] Fictionist Talks Current Tour With Neon Trees and New Music Video
Fictionist interview done by Mike De Man.
As a veteran band now, being together for 10 years, what separates Fictionist from the others also starting to make their way into the music scene?
A few things: we’ve had a lot of time to build chemistry; we’ve had time to figure out what we want through trial and error, both on the music and business sides of things; and we’ve realized how important people are in this pursuit – fans, team, family, each other. Basically more trials, more errors, more learning.
Your music video for Free Spirit came out earlier in the summer. How have people been reacting to it so far?
It seems as though people like it a lot. We’ve gotten lots of good reactions and press from it.
The song has a very summery and carefree vibe. Was that done on purpose for the season, or is that just how you would say you define the band’s sound?
The nature of the message of the song is to be carefree and have a “free spirit”. It’s what the song needed.
How was it working with videographer Jed Wells on this video?
We’ve known Jed for a long time and he’s always been a great help. He has a great vision and is a good friend.
Is there any specific meaning that goes with the video?
Be yourself.
The band just hit the road with Neon Trees, which is super exciting! What is the band doing to prepare for that?
Practice, practice, practice. It doesn’t matter where you are in your career, that’s the name of the game. We also revamped our digital presence. New website and all.
Do you have any grandiose expectations for this tour or are you just taking it as it comes?
We’re just using it as an opportunity to network and hone our performance skills. It’s one more log on the fire so to speak. We’ll have to wait and see if it catches.
