Today, May 12, 2015, Philadelphia’s Fire in the Radio release their new record titled “Telemetry.” Half Cloth is currently hosting an exclusive stream of the record and had the following to say “A melodic punk supergroup of sorts, Fire In The Radio are a band of punk and hardcore lifers who’ve pooled their resumes into an exceptionally catchy, well-written record, Telemetry. Think Samiam, late-period Jawbreaker, even Saves The Day.” In addition, Punknews has called the record “a testimony to Fire in the Radio’s strength to write indulgently catchy songs that will never lose their luster.”
Fire in the Radio kick off their record release show tonight in Philadelphia with Three Man Cannon (Lame-O Records) and Hound (featuring members of None More Black and Ted Leo and the Pharmacists). Philly Weekly has billed the record release one of the “Top 10 shows of the week.” The tour will also include a pair of Canadian dates supporting Knapsack, and a performance at this year’s annual Pouzza Fest in Montreal. You can check out the full string of dates here:
May 12 – The Boot and Saddle, Philadelphia, PA (w/ Hound, Three Man Cannon)
May 13 – The Low Beat, Albany, NY (w/ The Orange)
May 14 – Bug Jar, Rochester, NY (w/ Iron Chic)
May 16 – Horseshoe Tavern, Toronto, ON (w/ Knapsack)
May 17 – Pouzza Fest, Montreal, QB (w/ Knapsack)
Work on Telemetry, which contains eleven tracks, started last year when Fire in the Radio spent time at Inner Ear studios in Washington, DC, with engineer Don Zientara (Fugazi) doing a series of demos. The demos turned into the foundation for a full-length record that was recorded in the summer of 2014 at Miner Street Studios in Philadelphia (The Menzingers, Restorations) with producer Thom Flowers (Lagwagon) and engineer Matt Schimelfenig (Cayetana). The record was mixed by Jesse Gander (Japandroids) at Rain City Recorders in Vancouver, and mastered by Alan Douches in New York. The band, who derives their name from the Charles Bukowski poem “Regard Me,” has a unique sound that has been appropriately described as an amalgamation of Jawbreaker, Tigers Jaw, Weezer and Title Fight.
You can download a full copy of the band’s album here (not for public posting):
A film trailer detailing the recording of the record at Miner Street was shot by Brandon Dexter. The “Telemetry” video trailer can be viewed here.
In support of the release, the band has created a series of interconnected “webisodes” featuring new songs off the album. The first episode (“Crickets”) premiered at Substream Magazine last month (http://substreammagazine.com/2015/03/exclusive-fire-in-the-radio-capture-crickets-in-their-new-telemetry-webisode/). Last week, Diffuser.fm premiered the second installment titled “The Equalizer” (http://diffuser.fm/fire-in-the-radio-episode-402-the-equalizer-video-premiere/). The band explains: “(We) have made a series of short video episodes that depict the dark comedic account of fictional character Donald C., a drummer who is struggling to find a more prominent role in his band (and in life). Each video is soundtracked by one of the songs off ‘Telemetry.’ The second installment finds Donald C. playing a series of pranks in response to his band being treated poorly by a group of unruly tour mates. With titles like “Alternate Tuning,” “I’m a Belieber,” “Shock the Monkey,” and “Easter Parade,” the pranks serve to prove that Donald C. and his band are not to be messed with. When viewed together, the videos serve as a charming, Wes Anderson-style short film.
