With his beautifully offbeat, gloriously sun-baked debut LP Slow Gum hurtling our way this summer (June 29th, actually), rapidly ascendant Australian troubadour Fraser A. Gorman’s new single “Shiny Gun” premieres on Stereogum with a music video featuring Courtney Barnett, and it shows just why he is tipped to be one of the best and brightest new talents around right now. Stereogum hailed the video, saying “Directed by Sunny Leunig, the clip is a fine piece of throwback work that Ron Burgundy would be proud of. His friend and label head Courtney Barnett assists as the sports correspondent on a fun ’70s-style news broadcast turned jam session. If only local news was this entertaining.”
Watch: Fraser A. Gorman – “Shiny Gun” Music Video
Twisting the very roots or country, rock’n’roll and folk, with “Shiny Gun” Gorman delivers a warmly rousing anthem in waiting, genuflecting to the greats such as Woody Guthrie while also forging his own unique path more akin to modern outsider heroes like Cass Mccombs and Bill Callahan. As always with Gorman, his distinctly oddball wit and wry poetry courses through the song’s veins, culminating in a chorus that’s as heart-tugging as it’s uplifting.
