In celebration of the release of Intellectual Property, the genre-defying band Waterparks performed yet another sold out show at the House of Blues in Orlando during their stop on The Property Tour, this time bringing along support from Sophie Powers and HUNNY. I wasn’t able to get there early enough to catch the first, but HUNNY certainly had many supporters in the crowd sporting their band merch, and the audience was energetic during their set. As the crew set the stage for Waterparks, the excitement in the crowd began to build. A quick glance around the packed space provided evidence that this band appeals to truly ALL music lovers, as attendees were wearing band tees spanning everything from progressive metal giants Between The Buried And Me to recent pop sensation FLETCHER. Awsten (vocals/guitar), Geoff (guitar), and Otto (drums) approach music writing with an “I’ll do whatever the hell I want” attitude, and it certainly pays off, especially in a live setting. They don’t take themselves too seriously and neither do their fans. Everyone was there to just have a great time and forget their baggage for a solid hour and a half.
“ST*RFUCKER” was the perfect jumping off point for the occasion. Awsten emerged from backstage rocking a giant, fluffy parka which was hilarious given how insanely hot it was in Orlando that evening. The space was set up to look like a house with the windows serving as LED screens to display colorful animations and lyrics. As usual with Waterparks, there was a lot of attention to detail when creating this tour’s setup.
In addition to his predictable banter (and sometimes hilarious, good-natured harassment) of the audience, Awsten always includes a brief and unpredictable acoustic break in their headlining sets. In fact, the setlists taped onto the stage even referenced this part of the show as “Whatever Awsten Is Doing.” He ended up including snippets of “Powerless,” “11:11,” and “Sleep Alone” at this particular show. These spur of the moment interactions with the crowd keep fans coming back to see the band whenever they’re in town. The energy picked right back up again with fan favorite “I Miss Having Sex But At Least I Don’t Wanna Die Anymore” and didn’t let up until the show eventually concluded with the insanely popular single, “Funeral Grey.” The full show setlist is pictured below!
