Interview: Clint Simpson of Voices discusses Resurgence EP

Congratulations on the release of Resurgence! It’s been out for about a month now. How has the response from your fans been so far?
This has been a career defining moment for us. We went on hiatus for about a year to figure out member changes and the direction we wanted to go in. With this record release the fans have fully embraced us and the new direction we have gone in. A lot of feedback has been that we are better than ever. Which is a great achievement.

You’ve gone through some lineup changes since your last release. What styles and influences have the new members brought to the table?
The new members have brought a lot of different styles ranging from Pop to Death Metal. I think that alone has been a big factor as to our overall direction change.

Before even listening to the new EP, the artwork immediately piqued my interest. It’s very well done. How did that come together and how does it tie in with the lyrical themes on Resurgence?
Our vocalist Blaine actually did the artwork. The idea behind the album is to essentially be reborn. Or to have a resurgence in life so to speak. We are all really into the idea of aliens. So the abduction aspect is like leaving your past and preparing for the future.

If you had to choose a favorite lyric from the EP, what would it be and why?
My personal favorite lyric is “Save your breath cause, I’m not going to be who you want me to be.” That’s from our song Worth (Keep Me Blind). It speaks to me because I am big on being yourself and not letting others dictate how you feel or how you see yourself.

Aside from life experiences and other musicians, what inspires you to write and create?
Music for me has always been an outlet. It’s been a way to express myself in a positive way. Kind of how a director or actor uses film to tell stories or as an outlet of expression.

We heard that we can look forward to the announcement of some tour dates in the near future. What new tracks are you most looking forward to playing live?
We already play a lot of the record live. We have been talking about working the song “Haze” into the set. I think that song would be sick to play live.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers about the band?
We love making music and we make music so that people can feel something from it. We just want to thank everyone who has supported us from day one. Your love and support doesn’t go unnoticed. Everyone can expect to see a lot more of us in the coming year! Keep your eyes peeled and tell your friends!
