Picturesque interview done by Mike De Man.
Picturesque, a brand new local band with a sound many of us have either not heard since the good old days of 2009, or have never heard before, are making great strides with their newly developed career in music. What is the biggest thing you guys want to accomplish with this band?
Right now the biggest thing we want to do is travel and meet new people. We take things a step at a time, but I suppose world domination could be formidable.
In December 2014, you guys released the first version of your EP, which holds three mind blowing songs. Were there any others you considered putting on it before you released it for free on bandcamp?
There were, and it’s looking like some of them may make the full length.
As I just mentioned before, the EP is FREE on bandcamp. Do you think putting it online for “name your price” instead of charging a couple bucks like most other bands do is a better strategy for the way the music industry is changing so rapidly?
For us it was a better option. We didn’t have a fan base when we released the songs. It felt like it would spread easier if everyone who wanted the songs had them readily available to share with whomever.
The EP opens with the song which seems to be your most popular, and the one you’ve done your music video for, Speak Softly. This song, next to Just Exist, which we’ll come back to, really showcases exactly what Picturesque can do. Was this song chosen on purpose to open the EP to draw people in?
Yep! We had a friend (Robby Joyner) tell us something that really stuck. In any song, get to the chorus within 30 seconds or you lose the listeners attention. Why not catch the listener’s’ attention as soon as the EP starts?
Next in line, which is the one that made me fall in love with you guys, Just Exist, has a chorus that will get stuck in your head for years. “I don’t wanna live in a world like this, where ignorance is bliss.” What frustration came into your life that made you write that lyric?
I had a pretty brutal ending to a 6 year relationship. I was a bit unstable.
The breakdown after the first chorus shatters the fourth wall for me, and I’m sure a lot of other 2009 post hardcore fans. Do you have any plans to continue along with that kind of essence in future writing?
Ohhh yeah! Its way too fun to play live not to.
Recently the band re-released the EP with all three songs now having acoustic tracks. What made you guys go back and decide to do that?
We wanted to save any new songs for the album, but we wanted something else to give out for free in the mean time.
To draw back on the post hardcore sound, you guys have a sound that reminds me of bands such as Of Machines and PMtoday, and that is amazing, because those are two acts that will live on forever as two of the most talented bands in the genre. What are some of the bands that Picturesque draws their influences from?
Of Machines and PMtoday are definitely on the list! Some others would be Oceana, As Cities Burn, Underoath….
With the kind of music that you guys are producing at the moment, it can drive you up to the stars. Where would you like to be in five years?
Touring full time
Are there any bands you’ve been dreaming of touring with since you were young?
Boyz II Men
As the days pass, Picturesque is getting more and more exposure through the EP and now with the music video coming, you guys are set for life. What’s the next step you have in mind to take the band to highest place imaginable?
We’re following Warped Tour this summer handing out FREE copies of the EP!
