Band Launches U.S. Tour on May 27th
with Support from Larry and His Flask
Cincinnati, OH rockers Foxy Shazam launched a sneak attack on fans today by self-releasing their new LP GONZO for FREE along with announcing an extensive tour in support of the new record starting on May 27th. The free download is available via www.foxyshazam.com. Offering support on the entire run is Larry and His Flask. See dates below.
Foxy Shazam has never been good at following the rules, but the latest chapter in their rollercoaster tale is undoubtedly the most groundbreaking. Reaching the brink of huge success on the backs of a handful of quirky pop-oriented albums, the band leaves major label representation to dictate their own career and delivers a brutally honest emotional masterpiece.
Recorded with famed engineer Steve Albini (Nirvana, Fugazi, The Pixies, Iggy & The Stooges) over a dreary Halloween holiday in Chicago, IL, GONZO evokes a level of fierce impassioned authenticity previously unheard in Foxy’s back catalogue. Recorded entirely live in one room, in running order, vocals and all, the album is a tremendous feat of will, talent, and artistic integrity in an age when delivering anything remotely challenging is oft considered taboo.
Reflecting on working with Albini, singer Eric Nally states “He’s the master of recording what you’re good at. [The album] was written in a room, recorded in a room, all together. It was a shared experience, and an easier process, and things really started to come out. It was a very organic experience, and it shows. And I can read [GONZO] like a book, like a cohesive piece of art. It’s by far the most personal album to me.”
Gone are the theatrical backup harmonies, stripped are the multilayered guitar tracks, wiped away is the polished finish of a pop producer’s mentality. In their place remains a smoldering, gutsy work of pure desire. Fervor. Agitation. Honesty. Insanity. Rock and roll, but so much more.
GONZO is the kind of album that was screaming to be released. It is at once this phenomenal band’s most soothing, searing, heavy, biting, dreamy, and generally jarring statement to date, in a career built upon unorthodoxy.
GONZO refuses to adhere to any singular musical identity, at times tightly mechanical before bursting into waves of flowing color. Exploring musical territory only hinted at in previous releases, the band’s latest album depictsFoxy Shazam in their most penetrating and exposed form, their characteristic grandiosity clearly evident but captured in a severe new light.
In addition to their headline tour in support of GONZO, Foxy Shazam has been confirmed for The Bunbury Music Festival on July 12 in Cincinnati, where they will play alongside The Flaming Lips, Fitz and The Tantrums, Paramore, Fall Out Boy and many more.
