Into the Light, a band from Rochester, N.Y., shows us how to do alternative rock right with their new single.
Into the Light, a band that pitches themselves as shoegaze and post-punk, has released their newest single, “Manuscript”. With origins among the members of this band from the likes of Achilles, Hard to Know, and Bad Bloom, three hardcore and/or shoegaze bands notably from New York’s alternative scene, it’s hard to even imagine Into the Light releasing a subpar single in either genre. Thankfully, this is not what has happened – “Manuscript” is quite good, and certainly aligns with the sensibilities of post-punk.
This song is fairly easy to listen to lyrically, which is a boon in a world where music is getting increasingly rough, edgy, and ever-louder (which isn’t at all to say that any of that is bad, but rather that Into the Light’s latest single is a lyrically refreshing piece). The lyric “My mind keeps running away” pervades throughout the track and, personally, my own mind keeps coming back to it. It resonates with me on a level that feels right; there is no doubt that there are and will be many others who feel the same.
To only talk about the lyrics, and just one line to boot would be doing Into the Light a disservice, though. The percussion and bassline in “Manuscript” are both top-notch, while the guitar provides similarly-rhythmic tones that not only augment said rhythm and percussion sections but also very much support the vocals in a way that should absolutely be seen as uniquely up-to-task.
Maybe I’m a little biased – after all, Into the Light is from my beloved home of Rochester, New York – but as it stands, I strongly believe that this band is one to keep more of an eye on. They are the legacy of some major hardcore bands who have all come together to create something magical, emotional, and truly astonishing. It’s more than worth your time to give Into the Light’s latest single a listen and decide for yourself, but it’s clear to us on the whole that the band is stunningly great both in the experience and execution of their craft.
