London-based Swedish artist Iönä’s latest single off of her solo project has ensnared us in a net of beautiful melancholy.
London-based electronic-pop artist Iönä has begun to delve into her solo project with a new single. “Take Me To The Sea” is a post-breakup experience that laments a lost relationship in a way that ebbs and flows, much like the tides indirectly alluded to in the single. It’s surprisingly calming despite its pointed anger and sadness, a notion of intense emotion that strongly permeates throughout the track.
“Take Me To The Sea” begins with a scornful set of lyrics that are directed at a freshly-split lover, but then go into a chorus that begs the listener for escape into the pool (so to speak) of potential partners. The eponymous lyric “Take me to the sea” leads to a request for freedom both from the lover and for the singer’s own self. This is a fantastic example of a breakup song that could absolutely be a break-out sensation come the summertime.
One more relevant important aspect of Iönä’s vocals in this track is the vocalization outside of mere lyrics. These “oooh”s are extremely mournful of the relationship that had been left, and was described with anger in the lyrics. They almost belie the notions that were presented in that anger; however, it should of course be noted that you can still wish to return to a relationship and fully acknowledge that it won’t happen, or perhaps shouldn’t happen (and that it is totally alright to be feeling confused in those times!).
Additionally, the melodies in the synthetic instrumentation lend themselves well to the vocals. Sounding like something out of a dark, smoky jazz lounge from a future that could never be (or could absolutely be, if a butterfly flaps its wings just right), the tones and beats all provide the melancholic rhythm necessary to support Iönä and her stunningly smooth vocals.
As it stands, Iönä’s latest single gives us a taste of what she can really do as a solo artist. With notes of artists like Lana Del Rey and Portishead alike, Iönä delivers a single that really knocks the “breakup song” pseudo-genre out of the park. We look forward to hearing more from this artist’s solo projects to come!
