“Hadn’t had a drink in a month, ‘til I saw you with another one.”
Sonnder’s final single is brutally honest from the start, reflecting on the many ways in which the ending of any intimate relationship may attempt to destroy you. However, “Never Want You Back” ironically embodies a hope in new beginnings. Saying goodbye to a beloved Philly band is bittersweet, but the message is one we can all get behind.
Vocalist\guitarist Ryan Weidman shares,
“‘Never Want You Back’” would have been the first single off the next full length we had planned; We worked with producer Mark McClusky (Weezer, Motion City Soundtrack, Bad Religion etc.) and mastering artist Sarah Register (The Shins, Brand New, etc.) on this to really make this song very special. My long time friend Robby Webb mixed the song and really helped me push myself to finish the vocals when all hope seemed lost. Essentially it is a mean blunt straight up break up song. It says everything with nothing held back; I’m not as used to writing lyrics that are that on the sleeve. It tackles a lot of what I’ve been going through, the pettiness of a break up with someone you still love very much. That sophomoric feeling of “UGH!!! I never want them back!” Haha, but that’s not truly how you actually feel. I think a lot of people will relate. Perhaps it has a double meaning being the last song from the band as well. I think it really serves nicely as a way to close the door, a way to say goodbye that feels finished, a high note to leave it all behind so I can move forward in my life without regrets of the past 5 years. So many people believed in me and helped me make my childhood dreams a reality; and for that, a part of my heart will always sustain. I do feel a lot of love and appreciation for the time my ex bandmates and ex girlfriend put into this band and most of all the time they invested in me. I wouldn’t and couldn’t have done it without them. Always love in my heart for all of them. I am not sure what I will do next; I’m just floating through life right now, waiting for the next bolt of lightning to strike.”
Director Dan Levitt captured this sentiment in the music video. He commented,
“In the past when I would work with Sonnder, I took a less conceptual approach to the videos, but I wanted to do something different with this video. Not only did I want the concept of the video to be different, I wanted the video to have a totally different aesthetic than everything I’ve done before.”
