Read our interview with the artist Lily Welch
SwitchBitch Noise interviews Lily Welch, an accomplished solo artist hailing from the picturesque state of Vermont a week before she drops her new single “Stay”. With her distinct, flawless vocals, and unique approach to production, Welch has established herself as an artist to watch in the indie pop music scene. Drawing inspiration from acclaimed musicians like Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker, Welch delivers a refreshing sound that is both captivating and thought-provoking. Her fresh vocals and risk-taking approach to producing her music make her an artist to watch.
1. We see you are from the beautiful state of Vermont. Are you active in a music scene community there, or do you consider yourself a loner in making your music?
Although I have been writing songs for awhile I have just started to find my footing in the music scene in Vermont. I have played a few shows over the last few years but just started playing regularly at a small venue this year. I have definitely started to become more involved in the music scene although I am definitely a loner when it comes to making my music.

2. We would love to know why you made the decision to eschew the expected guitar-vocal folk style of singer-songwriter music and instead released your song with pop-influenced electronic production?
As a young singer songwriter I am still trying to find my sound. I enjoy a wide range of music and one of my influences over the years has been Sylvan Esso. I admire their sound. My songs have generally been more melodic and chill and I wanted to try something more upbeat.

3. We’d love to know if you self-produce your music and if you work with anyone else in creating your songs.
For my first single I worked with Jay Nash, another singer songwriter to produce it. I self produced my EP and this latest single.

4. If you could collaborate with any artist living or not, who would it be?
It would be my dream to collaborate with Kai Straw, He is relatively new to me but I have been listening to him for the last year. I love his blend and balance of beats with piano and guitar and his lyrics really resonate with me.

5. We read that you were influenced by your parents who nurtured your love of books and culture. What music did you grow up listening to that was in their library?
My dad’s taste in music, like mine, is pretty vast. I grew up listening to a little of everything like Deer Tick, Joni Mitchell, Michael Jackson, Tribe Called Quest, James Brown to the Glitch Mob.

6. What are your goals in releasing music?
I want to make music that people can relate to or turn to. Whether it something to sulk in or find release in it or something that moves you. Music has always been medicine for me and releasing it allows me to share that.
LW
7. Do you have any upcoming live performances coming up? Do you have any plans to see live performances by any of your favorite artists this season?
I am playing a few local festivals in Vermont this summer. There are some plans in the works to play others. Yes, I have tickets to see Rainbow Kitten Surprise, Noah Kahn and Sylvan Esso this spring and summer.
LW
8. And finally, what are your plans for the future with your music?
Barring a record deal I am planning to attend Belmont University’s Curb School of Music in the fall in Nashville. I plan to keep writing and preforming and hopefully make a living at it someday.
