40 Years Ago Today…

Our friends at Big Hair & Plastic Grass: A Funky Ride Through Baseball in the 1970’s reminded us that forty years ago today Dock Ellis was yanked from the mound by manager Danny Murtaugh after he intentionally plunked the first three Cincinnati Reds batters, then narrowly misses Tony Perez and Johnny Bench. Dock, concerned that his teammates had been completely and unnecessarily psyched out by the Reds, alerted them before the game that he was going headhunting. “We gonna get down,” he told them. “We gonna do the do. I’m going to hit these motherfuckers.”

In honor the 40 year anniversary please listen to The Baseball Projects’ song commemorating the event
