Album Review: The Nearly Deads – Invisible Tonight

Once in a while an album comes along that is like a trip to a restaurant that only serves your favorite foods, or bar that only serves your favorite drinks (which is the Hotel Vernon is Worcester, MA BTW, $1 drafts of PBR and Narragansett are my favorite drinks).  Invisible Tonight is that album for me.  Anyone who knows me knows that I tend obsess over a band when I start to get into them and I can certainly see that happening here with The Nearly Deads.  The Nashville by way of Tampa group combines the edge and energy of My Chemical Romance with some of the softer pop sentiment of early Paramore, Katy Perry, or even Foo Fighters.  I don’t name drop without a purpose, but once you listen to this album I’m sure that you will see the light with me.

The album opens with two very strong dancey numbers, “I Said” and the title track, “Invisible Tonight.”  The incredible layering on the guitars and sheer melodic value will implant these songs forcibly into your frontal cortex; you will be stuck with them in your head for days. These are followed up by another standout, “In The Morning” which appeals to a more sensitive side with intense bass lines, incredible vocals on the chorus, and strong piano interludes.

On the whole what sticks out most on a first impression are clear cut vocals, strong bass lines, thick guitar tone, and a percussive strength that urges you to move to the music.  These are the qualities that I predict will make The Nearly Deads stick out from the crowd.  It’s fun music and incredibly easy to fall in love with.

For me, it’s a dead ringer that this album is a purchase worthy addition to your music library, and that can be done here, so don’t sleep on it. You can also check out the video for the opening track, “I Said” below.
