Exclusive Interview: Daisyhead’s Michael Roe

Nashville rock band Daisyhead recently released their debut full-length recordThe Smallest Light, available now from No Sleep Records. The Smallest Light is Daisyhead’s follow-up to the band’s I Couldn’t Face You EP and their split with Have Mercy, which were both released in 2013. I got the pleasure of interviewing lead singer Michael Roe

Follow the band at https://www.facebook.com/daisyheadtn for additional updates.

SBN: For those who might not know, can you just introduce the band?

M: Michael Roe

C: Curtis Durart

Z: Zach Chiarizzio

T: Tate Mercer

SBN: When you think Tennessee, generally this genre isn’t what comes to mind. How did you all get into playing an alternative style of music?

You would honestly be surprised how many great bands there are from TN from all genres of rock.  Nashville in general is becoming a place for everyone to go to pursue music, even if you aren’t a country artist.  I grew up in Memphis, and always saw Nashville as a “Country” type place before I moved here.  Obviously, there is a strong scene for that type of music here, but that’s just kind of what people see from the outside looking in.  Each of us have different musical backgrounds, and we got together and played what worked for all of us.  I’ve done all kinds of projects, but Daisyhead is by far what feels the best and is the most fun.

SBN: What brought you all together?

The band was put together by our original drummer, and our current guitarist, Curtis.  They hit me up about singing for this band, which started as a side project.  It ended up being too fun to not try to do full time!

SBN: You just released your new full-length earlier this month, could you tell me a little bit about what that was like?

The entire process was so awesome.  From writing the record, to recording it, and releasing it.  We all bonded a lot while writing the record, and we feel like Tate, who recorded the record, and is now our drummer, captured the songs just how we wanted.  Releasing a record on No Sleep was a dream of mine that I never expected to come true.  It’s all just been so great, and the responses have been very encouraging.

SBN: It’s kind of funny, listening to Spotify as I’m writing these questions and I stopped to see what song came on because I really liked it..sure enough it’s East Bend from your new album! Who/where/what did you find inspiration from for this song?

My mother and I have had a pretty interesting journey.  When I was younger, I never thought we would have the relationship that we have now.  I want to make her proud with every step I take, so East Bend is a reflection of that situation.

SBN:Personally, Have Mercy is one of my new favorite bands, what was it like sharing your split EP with them?

That’s a good judgment call, because that band is incredible.  They have picked up so much speed lately, and they deserve it.  Sharing a split with them was really cool, because we were pretty unheard of at the time, and they were/are doing great things, so that helped us out quite a bit.  Much love for that band and the split we did with them.

SBN: What should fans keep their eyes and ears out for in the future?

Everyone should expect to see us working hard to be sure we can tour as much of this world as we possibly can.  We have been working on some visual content as well, so definitely be on the lookout for that.
