“My name is Bella. I am from NY and based in NY. I produce and write my own songs and play all the instruments. I sing the songs as well but I am not a singer. I make music alone. A solo operation. I am chronically single as well. But that’s an issue for another day.” – RPK Princess

We interview the mysterious person behind RPK Princess about her indie pop music and life in NY.

RPK: I make pop / indie rock music but my favorite genre is rap. I got into production by making rap beats in highschool. I liked to sample old vinyl records. I looked up to producers like J Dilla, Madlib, and The Alchemist.

SBN: Are there any other interesting or amusing happenings – no matter how small – that the band have been involved with that would be of interest to those who like your music?

RPK: I am an agent of chaos.

SBN: Where was the single/EP/album recorded and who was involved in its production?

RPK: I worked as an engineer for a Grammy-award-winning producer in downtown Manhattan and crafted “chemical” in his studio while he was away.

SBN: Is there a particular ethos behind the single/EP/album or a particular music style or event that inspired your single “Chemical”?

RPK: I was listening to a lot of guitar stuff at the time. Libertines and Babyshambles type music. Gorillaz / Blur. And Elliott Smith of course. Always listening to Elliott. This is not in the same lane at all but they definitely inspire me. I ran a Fender strat through a Chandler TG Microphone Cassette and boosted the treble. Added some RC-20 and a couple other plug-ins. I liked the crunch and I hope you do too.

SBN: Can you briefly describe what the song/each song is about?

RPK: My two-year sobriety inspires my work. This song mirrors the false euphoria of drugs, using delay to create an atmosphere of artificial bliss. I play each part and write lyrics with effects already added so my ideas become enmeshed with the sound.

SBN: Were there any notable or amusing happenings surrounding the recording/production of the EP? As above, list whatever might be of relevance.

RPK: I’m really proud of the third and fourth chords… I went from C major to C minor. Nothing crazy but I just love the melancholic feeling that you get from going from a major chord to the same chord in minor.
