FEATURE OF THE WEEK: Interview with the young & amazingly talented, Hannah Gill!

SBN = Mike Abiuso of SwitchBitch Noise

HG = Hannah Gill

SBN: Hey Hannah, it’s great to be here and able to chat! Before we get started, can you please introduce yourself and your roll as a musician?

HG: Well my name is Hannah and I am seventeen years old. I have been a singer all of my life and through a series of unbelievable events I have gotten the opportunity to perform with some amazingly talented musicians.

SBN: For readers that are new to you, can you tell them what genre you would say your music falls into and maybe hit them with a few “for fans of”?

HG: I would categorize our music as a cross between indie and jazz. When writing music I try to give off an alternative feel while still having that jazz undertone I love so much. If you are a fan of Fiona AppleNorah Jones, or Kimbra you should have a listen!

SBN: So you’re 17 years old, you’ve written amazing music, worked with amazing musicians and producers, you have a professional lyric video and are working with a great publicity team. How did you for one, know to line this stuff up, and two, how did you pick and choose your team to work with (it’s very impressive)?

HG: Well it was all luck in all honesty. One day father showed a group of people at work a video of me singing, one of the men said that he has a son (Brad Hammonds; Guitar player) who owns a recording studio up in New York and he would be willing to record a couple of songs for Hannah. My father put it off for a few years, but then for my sixteenth birthday we went up to New York to record two songs and to see Ben Howard in concert. By the time the recording session was over they asked me back! After a month or so I came back to NYC to record an EP and perform live at a local café. Brad put together a band of people he had worked with in the past to perform with us and the chemistry was perfect! I am still playing with the same people today. I have been very lucky.

SBN: How would you describe the Easton, MD music scene, and do you feel it affects and influences your work?

HG : VERY small. It is your quintessential small town, you have some bands that play at farmers markets or at local festivals but other than that it isn’t much. I think this gives me the musical freedom to really play whatever I want. There is no preexisting mold I need to try and fit myself into.

SBN: Is it difficult to be able to balance school and music?

HG: At times, especially now that I am applying to colleges, but it is challenging in a good way. I like the feeling of always having something to do, so I do enjoy balancing school and music. Plus I can have the satisfaction of knowing I am doing things not every high school student gets the opportunity to do.

SBN: I’m going to keep this interview short because I would like to chat again after the “I Feel Awake” EP is released on January 20th if that’s cool with you. Can you please give the readers a farewell and let them know where they can keep up with you via your social medias?

HG: Thank you guys so much for the interview! You can check out our music on Facebook, TwitterInstagram, and Reverbnation at Hannah Gill Music. You can also check us out at HannahGillMusic.com!

SBN: Thanks again Hannah. We’re excited to hear the new tunes!

    […] At only 17 years old, Hannah’s voice brings to mind soulful performers such as Florence & The Machine, Lana Del Rey, and Kate Nash. Her uncommon vocal talent combined with a wisdom and maturity in her young age is what sets Hannah apart.  To get a taste of Hannah’s mature, soulful vibe, check out our exclusive interview with her which contains her cover of Hozier’s “Take Me To Church”: HERE.
