INTERVIEW: Pros & iCons

Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for SwitchBitch Noise! Where and when does this interview find you?
Hey! Thank you for having us! We are here in NYC chilling at one of our studios on a cold Friday night.

You’ve cited a wide variety of artists as influences (Linkin Park, Bring Me The Horizon, Lady Gaga, Elton John), but what artists would you credit for making you fall in love with pop music?
We have always been in love with music since we were kids and pop music was always involved whether it be our parents playing it or our friends, but Bruno Mars, Twenty One Pilots, and Lady Gaga are a few artists that really make us believe in what is played on top 40 radio. They push the envelope with their sound as we did with our debut album iConic.

How do you ensure that your live performances stand out for fans?
Pros & iCons’ live performance is definitely very high on the list of why fans love us. The energy found in the 1980’s era of rock & roll clubs is what Pros & iCons brings to each show. We sat down and spoke about what we wanted to see during our live set and compiled notes about lights, smoke, and choreography. Afterwards we brought it all to life. Tylo took the reigns on the lights and now we have a light show that we programmed to our set and we have synchronized choreography during certain songs. Crowd participation is also key. We bring people on stage to dance and Niko and LennyJ. even go into the crowd to make some magical moments happen. Last, but not least, we make sure we hear your beautiful voices every show we play.

What was the biggest challenge you faced while writing and recording your album, iConic? How did you overcome it?

The biggest challenge was definitely finding our sound and fine tuning our brand. It took a couple of years to make iConic happen. We struggled to find consistency with the tracks being written and one day we found our stride. It was when we wrote “iConic,” which is the opening track to the album. The ambient intro being contrasted by that huge drop is the definition of Pros & iCons. Low end 808, sub bass, hip hop drums, paired with distortion on the guitars, and finally topped off with a pop hook over it. Truly an iconic moment in the history of Pros & iCons.

If you had to cover any album in its entirety, what would it be and why?
Hmm…definitely hard to choose a full album! We’ve covered an album’s worth of our favorite songs before on our YouTube channel! Go check out our reimaginations at www.youtube.com/prosandicons. But to answer your question, we’d probably choose “American Idiot” by Green Day because that album holds a special place collectively in all of our hearts.

What are your current top 5 favorite songs?
Perhaps a different answer for each… but:
LennyJ. – “Elevate” by Drake
Niko – “You & Jennifer” by Bulow
Joey Dean – “Edge of Gory” by Lady Gaga
Tylo – “Trip Trap” by Marcus Miller
