Alex Winston is excited to debut the new single “Careless”, from her forthcoming spring 2015 album on 300 Entertainment. “Careless”, which Stereogum praised as “superb” and noted as an example of Winston’s gift for writing “big, meticulously crafted pop songs”, is streaming on SoundCloud and available now on iTunes, Spotify, and Google Play.  The single  will also be released as a 7″ with the b-side “We Got Nothing” on February 10th via Neon Gold. “Alex Winston makes the kind of big, meticulously crafted pop songs that sound anthemic without coming across as soulless.”- Stereogum

Winston has spent the past year anchorless as she bounced back and forth between New York, LA, Detroit, and spaces in between while working on her new album. “I really like meeting new people and hearing their stories,” she explains, “I think that’s why I like traveling a lot.”

That restless curiosity has been a constant driver and source of creative energy for the young but seasoned musician, coursing through her from the moment she began writing songs in high school, to her decision to forgo college and immerse herself in New York’s music scene shortly thereafter. In the past, and in particular on her last LP King Con, her inquisitive nature also lent itself to songs written about unique characters and sub-cultures Winston came across in travel, books, or documentaries.

On her forthcoming album however, Winston has turned her explorative impulses inward, a process she found much more challenging as a songwriter than penning music and lyrics about fictional characters. “I’ve never been comfortable writing songs about myself,” she explains. “Its always been easier for me to tell stories, so I wasn’t used to being as vulnerable, but I had to be during writing.  I felt like I was doing myself a disservice not making the album personal because I’ve had a few tumultuous years.”

“Careless” heartily embraces that vulnerability in order to move past it. “Its about being uninhibited and stepping outside of myself,” explains Winston, “I get in my way A LOT.” While the more personal nature of her recent work is certainly a thematic departure from the material found on King Con, the shift is also indicative of Winston’s maturation as a musician and songwriter who finds herself more confident than ever in her own self expression.
