REVIEW: Oogee Wawa’s “More Sand Than Money”

Long Island, NY – November 2015 — Fewer things are more harsh than winters in the northeast. Thankfully, the fine lads in Oogee Wawa have found a way to turn up the heat and mellow the harsh winter winds with sweet, nostalgic sounds to transport you to a more desirable clime. More Sand Than Money does not sound like it was released in 2015. Rather, it contains a sweet blend of good vibrations from west coast favorites like 311 and Sublime with the quintessence of New York attitude with the daily grind from the likes of Gym Class Heroes.

From the start of the first track, “Let it out,” the bands mantra and essence becomes apparent. MC Jesse Lee shares the struggles of daily life in a way that doesn’t overly depress a listener, but bridges a gap to make the music relevant and directly applicable to the the audience. From the first note, the bands dominance as one of the upcoming alternative reggae acts is obvious and it is exactly what fans of that genre are looking for.

Other standout tracks include “More Sand Than Money,” which has the most raw energy and melodic flow on the album supported by incredible backing instruments, and “Pretty,” which has a soft, melodic quality not to be missed.

All-in-all, this album is the perfect prescription to your winter blues. If More Sand Than Money is any indication of direction, Oogee Wawa have definitely set themselves up for momentum which can only build into something bigger. Check out this album now or catch them at one of the dates listed below if you are in the area. I’m sure that boys mind chilling over a beer before they “Pack the Van.”
