The official movie soundtrack for The List has heart, soul, and positivity, all befitting an excellent rom-com soundtrack.

The List, a 2023 film released by Universal Pictures and directed by Melissa Miller Costanzo, has many things in theory that a romantic comedy should have. It has a plot that fits that genre, leads with great chemistry, and probably a good lesson or two snuck in there for good measure. However, equally worth noting is its charming and peppy soundtrack, supervised by Charles Newman. While I haven’t seen the film yet, I have gotten to listen to the soundtrack. Here’s what I think about it!

When listening to The List‘s soundtrack, I felt a wide range of emotions, as one is wont to do in this position. From Frank Bell‘s melancholy track “Too Soon” to the upbeat pep of Kris Gruen‘s “Body In Motion”, I felt a lot. There’s a lot to be said about how the film’s soundtrack evoked feelings I was frankly surprised to feel. And, to be blunt, I loved every last moment of it.

Highlights From The Official Movie Soundtrack

As memorable as so many of these songs are, we had to select a few choice tracks to showcase. As such, these seven tracks from the soundtrack for The List stood out to us the most:

  • “Half Way Down”, the second track, is by Kris Gruen and The Bones of J.R. Jones. With a wonderful tambourine rhythm and a twanging string/guitar section, the track lends some Southern Gothic flair to the soundtrack.
  • The seventh track, “I Am Lying”, is by The Davenports. The least far-fetched thing about this track is somehow it feels like a blend between the musical styles of Paul Simon and Elliot Smith. If alt-folk is a genre, The Davenports have its stylings in spades.
  • “Too Soon”, the eighth track (by Frank Bell), definitely elicited some emotion in me when I listened to it. His style is quite melancholy, as mentioned above. I have not seen the film yet, but I would vote the track “Most Likely To Be In A Sad Scene”. And that’s more than alright!
  • “Let’s Go (I Am Ready)”, the tenth track on the soundtrack, is by Carly Pearl and Frank Bell. In stake contrast to “Too Soon”, this track is positively upbeat and would go well in a date-preparation montage. Again, I haven’t seen The List yet, so that may be conjecture.
  • The eleventh track, PLEASE‘s “Even After The Fire”, blends the kind of alt-rock stylings you might hear from The Strokes with “Dammit, Janet” from The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The instrumentation lends itself well to that conclusion, and we are living for this.
  • Track #14, “Certain”, is performed by the composer for the film’s score, Maxton Waller. His crisp vocals and poignant lyrics make this a great listen. The track honestly makes the soundtrack shine.
  • Finally, track #18, Aloud’s “Waiting (Scenes From A Lonely Planet)” is reminiscent of “Get Back” by The Beatles. Yes, that sounds like a lofty statement, but hear me out. The vocals and guitar from this track hearken back to that song in many different ways, and it’s well worth the listen.

The List Is On Our List

Ultimately, I’d highly recommend giving the official movie soundtrack for The List a good, comprehensive listen. The order in which you watch the film versus listen to this soundtrack won’t entirely matter, but here’s my advice: If you’re a fan of romantic comedies in general, it might be fun to listen to the soundtrack first to pick out where you think the tracks will feature in the film. It’s just something to think about!
