The Tracys end their 10-year run with Welcome to the Land of Nothing, a boisterous punk-rock celebration of an album.

The punk scene would not be where it is today without the likes of The Tracys, a group who are celebrating ten years of working together as a band. Their fourth and final album, Welcome to the Land of Nothing, is fast, loud, and light in all the right places. But is their last album the hit they want it to be? Let’s examine it a bit!

“Candy From A Baby”, the opening track, is an optimal means to get us into “Bully Bully Blockhead”. The song feels like a perfect way to get us into the mood with the track that follows. Inexplicably, the tempo swing makes “Bully Bully Blockhead” even better in the album than it was as a single. The themes of manipulation and aggression all resonate here, as do the political undertones of these songs. The Tracys have been known for their political commentary and sardonic lyrics. Therefore, this isn’t new; but suffice it to say, it’s refreshing in this climate.

This brings us to “Scorched Earth A Go Go”, the third track on Welcome to the Land of Nothing. Personally, this feels like it’ll be the favorite for many fans of The Tracys. Specifically, the percussion (provided by drummer Matt Ernst) gives the sort of high-octane surf rock this song needed to become a smash. In that way, paired with the lyrics, bass, and guitar, this song becomes something worth jamming to.

“Guns and God”, the fifth track, is a vital indictment of the gun crisis that still plagues the U.S. today. What’s more, as the legislation of peoples’ bodily autonomy prevails over the legislation of gun control reform, The Tracys make a point to bring that notion to the forefront of their track as well. Also, the (rightful) verbal emasculation of those cowardly enough to brandish a weapon is immaculate here.

Finally, “The Dance Machine”, the last track on the album, is an absolute bop. Opening with a strong, fast-paced guitar riff and proceeding into some great lyrics, the song tells a story that works quite well with the musicality of The Tracys.

With this album being The Tracys’ last, it’s sad to see them go. However, three members of the band have formed a new one, called The Sparkles. This band consists of Matt Ernst, John Payne, and Larry Mancini. Furthermore, it is rumored that there might be a lost album by The Tracys coming to light later this year.

All in all, Welcome to the Land of Nothing is something pretty special. As far as punk goes, it’s interesting to see an experienced group like The Tracys getting into the spotlight and doing their thing onstage. Give the album a listen, and maybe loosen yourself up to dance a bit. Amid the sensibilities of the band’s grand finale, you’ll soon understand why.
