We Were Promised Jetpacks’ Unravelling Out October 14 on FatCat Records

“Clear, plaintive vocals propelled by ascending-staccato guitars and hellbent dance-worthy

rhythms, as if the Texas band Explosions in the Sky had shown up with New Order’s
singer and backfield.” – Rolling Stone

“They incorporate bursts of hard-edged, channelled energy, challenge conventions, and are most certainly smarter than the average band.” – Clash

We Were Promised Jetpacks will release their highly-anticipated third album, Unravelling, this fall on FatCat Records. The album, which will be released October 6 in the UK and October 14 in the US, is available for pre-order now on vinyl and CD in the FatCat Online Store.  We Were Promised Jetpacks have announced an extensive North American tour this fall in support of Unravelling. All upcoming shows are listed below.

Stereogum has premiered the video for the band’s new single “I Keep It Composed” which was directed by Ben Cowie. The video is the first in a series of three that Cowie and his team, who call themselves Wake Up Advice, are creating for We Were Promised Jetpacks. Cowie says, “You know it’s been a good days filming when at the end of it you’re relieved that you haven’t been arrested, and the forest you’re in has not burned to the ground. This was the feeling we had at the end of our long day filming for “I Keep it Composed.” This trilogy of music videos is kicked off with a lonesome man (played by Jonathan McGarrity) in the wake of an explosion.”

Last month, Clash Music in the UK premiered “I Keep It Composed” and said “[it’s] some of their most confident, most probing, most ambitious material to date.” Filled with pounding rhythm, surging guitars and heavy bass lines alongside the soft melodic piano and Adam Thompson’s emotionally riveting vocals makes this a powerfully turbulent yet beguiling track. Exhilarating and impassioned the new single leaves you wanting more. “I Keep It Composed” is also streaming and available to share via SoundCloud.

In 2008 Adam Thompson (vocals / guitar), Darren Lackie (drums), Sean Smith (bass) and Michael Palmer (Guitar) were friends and University students by day and one of Glasgow’s most talked about live bands by night. They signed to FatCat Records later that year and their debut album These Four Walls. Thus began the bands busy touring schedule, playing high profile festival slots around the UK and USA supporting labelmates Frightened Rabbit and The Twilight Sad2010 saw the release of EP The Last Place You’ll Look – comprising of unreleased tracks and swelling, orchestrally-inspired rewrites of songs from their debut album.

The bands sophomore release followed in 2011 and was recorded at Sigur Ros’s Sundlaugin Studios in Iceland. In the Pit of the Stomach was testament to the poise, control and vigour the band had learned to command. The extensive touring schedule continued and the release received support and high praise from the likes of Rolling Stone and SPIN. The band also continued to build on their high profile live performances with sets at CoachellaFashion’s Night Out at New York’s Rockerfeller Center and on Last Call With Carson Daly.

During the 2012 tour the band decided to document their journey with the help of friend and film maker Matt Gee. The final show of the run, at Philadelphia’s Union Transfer, was recorded and filmed in its entirety, capturing the explosive energy and drama fans have come to expect from a We Were Promised Jetpacks show. This material was released in February 2014 as ‘E Rey: Live in Philadelphia’, named in tribute to the bands then tour manager and friend Esteban Rey.

Also in early 2014 the band worked tirelessly on Unravelling. Recorded in Glasgow at the infamous Chem19 Studios with Paul Savage who has previously worked with numerous established and diverse Scottish acts such as Teenage FanclubKing Creosote, The Twilight SadFranz Ferdinand and Mogwai.

Lead vocalist Adam Thompson says, “It was a fairly straightforward decision to work with Paul. He has done plenty of brilliant work and we had worked with him for a few days before recording our first album and always remembered enjoying recording with him. I’m really chuffed with that decision. I think Paul has done a great job and its the first time we’ve ever been present to mix the album with the same person who has recorded it, which has been an enjoyable and much more relaxing experience for us.”

The impending album release also sees the addition of a new member to the band in the form ofmulti-instrumentalist Stuart McGachan. Thompson’s explains “Stuart is an accomplished keys, piano and guitar player as well as having a lovely little singing voice and with him we have tried to do something a little different with this selection of songs. We’ve known him for ages and played music with him before so we were pretty sure it would work out. It has just been the four of us since about April 2004 so having someone new with us has been an enjoyable part of the process.”
